MedRC Foundation Course

The MedRC Foundation Course is a practical and structured introduction to the essential skills needed to understand, conduct, and communicate medical and clinical research. The course includes more than 33 lessons combining interactive lectures, practical exercises, homework assignments, and applied research activities. All lectures are recorded, and students complete short assignments to reinforce key concepts and apply what they learn. Students also participate in a mock peer-review exercise using a sample scientific manuscript. They learn how to evaluate a study’s methodology, statistical analysis, results, and conclusions, and how to provide structured reviewer feedback. The course introduces large language models (LLMs) as interactive tools for learning and supporting statistical analysis. Students learn how to use LLMs to understand statistical concepts, select appropriate tests and models, assist with statistical code, interpret results, and identify potential errors or inappropriate analyses. Throughout the course, examples from real-world medical research connect concepts to practice. Students see how research questions develop into studies and how those studies are designed, analyzed, written, reviewed, and published . The course is designed for medical students, physicians, healthcare professionals, and early-career researchers who want to build a strong, practical foundation in medical research.

What you learn

Four areas of study — and what you produce in each

The Foundation Course follows the research process, from forming a question to explaining a result. Each area ends in a piece of work you complete yourself.

01

Research design and integrity

Research questions, study designs, epidemiology, bias and confounding, ethics and study planning.

You produce: A research planning worksheet: population, exposure, outcome, chosen design and likely sources of bias.
02

Data preparation and analysis

Data dictionaries, cleaning logs, missing values, descriptive statistics, linear and logistic regression.

You produce: A cleaning log and result note: a model fitted in Jamovi on synthetic data, interpreted with its limitations.
03

Evidence synthesis

Literature searching, systematic-review planning, screening, extraction, forest plots and heterogeneity.

You produce: A review decision record: eligibility criteria, a screening decision and a value traced to its source.
04

Writing and communicating research

Critical appraisal, manuscript structure, tables and figures, reporting checklists, responding to reviewers.

You produce: An appraisal or manuscript outline: question, methods, main result and limitations in a clear structure.

Practice tasks use synthetic or fictional data. Each course page lists its lessons, resources and what is included.

How it works

From enrollment to finished research work

A single, mentored path — the same three steps every student follows at MedRC.

01

Enroll and get your access

Buy the course, our team confirms your enrollment, and your lessons unlock in your dashboard — recorded content ready whenever you are.

02

Learn live with mentors who publish

Attend live sessions and workshops with mentors from Harvard, Mayo Clinic, Seoul National and more — questions answered in real time, not months later on a forum.

03

Finish with real research work

Every module ends in an applied deliverable — a research question, an analysis, a manuscript draft — so you leave with a portfolio, not just a certificate.

What our instructors say about the course

Reviews of the material from the researchers who built and vetted it — not student testimonials.

The curriculum was built the way I wish research had been taught to me — the fundamentals come first, and every module ends in something a student actually has to produce.

Curriculum design
The statistics track is unusually honest about what clinicians need to understand before they run a model — it stays close to how journals actually evaluate a paper.

Statistics & methodology
The mentors reviewing student work publish for a living. Access to that kind of feedback at this stage of training is rare, and it is the single thing that most changes outcomes.
