MedRC is pleased to welcome Dr. Nimer Abushehab, MD, Director of Skull Base and Cerebrovascular Research and Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport.
Dr. Abushehab’s journey provides an inspiring and practical example for international medical graduates. After earning his medical degree from An-Najah National University in Palestine, he pursued postdoctoral research training at the University of Southern California, followed by advanced research experience at Harvard Medical School and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He subsequently completed his neurosurgery residency at Ochsner LSU Health Shreveport and advanced fellowship training in skull base and cerebrovascular neurosurgery at UTHealth Houston before returning to LSU Health Shreveport as a faculty neurosurgeon.
Published extensively under the name Nimer Adeeb, Dr. Abushehab has contributed to a substantial body of peer-reviewed research in cerebrovascular, endovascular, and skull base neurosurgery. His work includes studies of intracranial aneurysms, flow-diversion devices, Woven EndoBridge devices, surgical outcomes, and other complex neurovascular conditions. He has also participated in major multicenter collaborations involving investigators and institutions across the United States and internationally.
Alongside his clinical and academic accomplishments, Dr. Abushehab has supported and mentored many medical students, international medical graduates, residents, and research fellows. He has helped trainees develop research skills, contribute to collaborative projects, publish their work, and prepare for clinical and academic career opportunities.
During this webinar, Dr. Abushehab will share lessons from his career and offer practical guidance on beginning and advancing a research career, finding effective mentors and research opportunities, building a strong publication record, developing productive collaborations and professional networks, pursuing research fellowships and grants, using research to strengthen residency applications and long-term career development, and supporting the next generation of trainees.
Although neurosurgery will serve as an illustrative example, the lessons will be relevant to medical students, international graduates, residents, fellows, and early-career researchers across all clinical specialties.
