Why We Built the MedRC Foundation Course
Medical research is often taught as a collection of separate skills. The MedRC Foundation Course was built around a different idea: students should understand how those skills connect and how research is actually done.

Research can be difficult to enter, not because information is unavailable, but because it is often unclear how everything fits together. A student may learn statistics in one place, academic writing somewhere else, and study design somewhere else, yet still be unsure how to take a research question and move it through an actual project.
That is one of the main reasons we built this course.
Building the foundation first
A foundation course cannot make someone an independent researcher overnight. What it can provide is a clearer map of the research process: how a question becomes a study, how data become evidence, how evidence becomes a manuscript, and how that manuscript is evaluated by the scientific community.
Our aim is for students to leave with that foundation and practical skills they can continue building throughout their research careers.
We also recognize that students enter research at very different stages. Some have never participated in a project. Others may already have publications but still feel uncomfortable with statistics, methodology, manuscript writing, or critical appraisal.
For this reason, we want students to understand not only how to perform individual research tasks, but also where those tasks belong within the larger process.
Learning with guidance
Research is rarely learned from lectures alone. Much of it is learned by doing, making mistakes, receiving feedback, and gradually becoming more independent.
We designed the course around a mentored style of learning. Students will have practical assignments, work through research problems, and complete a mock peer review of a scientific manuscript. The purpose is to practice thinking through the decisions researchers routinely face rather than simply remembering information for the duration of a class.
We also want to work with students as they identify their own research goals. Whether the immediate goal is understanding statistics, becoming more comfortable reading papers, contributing more effectively to a research team, or preparing to develop an independent project, we want the course to provide a starting point and guidance on what should come next.
Using new tools without losing the fundamentals
Research is changing. Artificial intelligence is increasingly becoming part of how researchers interact with data and scientific information. Students in the course will have access to a specialized AI model built specifically for research and will learn how it can support statistical analysis and research workflows.
Our view is that these tools are most useful when the researcher understands the principles behind what the tool is doing. AI can help someone work through an analysis or understand a difficult concept, but the researcher still needs to know whether the approach makes sense and whether the result can be trusted.
